Rob (00:00)
I'm that sucker who bought the Blackstone, I bought the Traeger, all these things that are in vogue right now.
Don (00:04)
Yeah, good luck. Yeah.
Rob (00:07)
I remember I was like finally I was like okay I mean you obviously start with ribs and you start with pork butt you start with you know some of those things and I finally was like all right I'm gonna I'm gonna do it like I'm gonna try it with brisket. I remember going to my local butcher and I got the thing I mean it was huge it was a giant one but it was massive and I just remember I'm just standing there at the checkout line the guy next to me just looks at me he just goes good luck
Don (00:30)
Yeah.
Alright, episode 168. We're back, Rob. We're back. 168 and ⁓ summer has sprung. I mean, it hasn't like officially sprung yet, I guess. I mean, it's hot. It's hot everywhere. ⁓ Pollen has come pollen has gone. It's warm in all corners of the earth, I feel like right now. ⁓ And so what that means to me, I guess right around the corner is Memorial Day coming up on Memorial Day, right?
Rob (00:56)
168.
1668.
All the time.
This weekend, in fact.
Don (01:20)
Yeah, yeah, this weekend Memorial
Day. ⁓ How do we tell you Memorial Day from an advertising perspective? I've always thought of it as it's time to buy cars, right? Isn't it like car dealership Memorial Day like, you know, come get your new car, right? I mean, for whatever reason, I have always associated Memorial Day with like car sales. Is that is that weird?
Rob (01:31)
Ha!
I have never,
that is so random. have never, no, nor have I, nor do I link those two. I mean, I might now that you've said that, but.
Don (01:45)
You were not expecting me to say that.
Well, I think I think I
am probably totally making this up or I have the fog of memory or something like that. I seem to remember that Memorial Day is kind of the cutoff. It's counterintuitive because we're already obviously five months into the year, right? But it is truly the cutoff of like last year's models of cars, right? And it's like, hey, we can't have any 2025 cars on our it has to be all 2020, you know, and then
Rob (02:05)
Yeah.
Hmm, yeah.
Everything
must go.
Don (02:16)
Yeah, everything must go and then the near the end of the maybe is it Labor Day or there's another you know, one of you know, and then it's like, oh, the 27s are here. You know, that type of thing. Right. So yeah, I feel like at a cocktail party a million years ago, I was talking to like a guy who worked at a dealership was like, Oh, no, it's legit. Like Memorial Day is the you're gonna get the best of all the months are gonna get like a deal if you don't like use Carvana and like fixed pricing and stuff like that from a dealership. It's gonna be Memorial Day. So
Rob (02:25)
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, we gotta make room for all the new inventory.
Okay.
Don (02:46)
I may
be taking a trip to a car dealership this weekend, is what's about to happen.
Rob (02:51)
⁓ okay. So, so that looks like, I don't think of Memorial Day as cars.
Don (02:54)
You don't think of Memorial Day as cars, but I clearly do. Yeah. All right. What
do you associate Memorial Day with from or you were going to say something? I don't mean it.
Rob (03:02)
I am well, we can come back to that. What do I associate it with? I associated with, honestly, and this is, I'm almost embarrassed to say this. I associate with like being outside and like grilling out. Like we're making hot dogs and we're doing things. Right. It's the hot dog sandwich. ⁓ it's the hot dog, hot dog sandwich. But no, I do. And I know that's not the reason we celebrate Memorial day, but that's how, how we celebrate Memorial day.
Don (03:13)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a hot dog. It's the hot dog holiday for sure.
Yeah, we're.
No. Yeah.
Rob (03:31)
⁓
Don (03:32)
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Rob (03:33)
that. But not cars. I was going to say, cars. let's think about ⁓ the marketing of cars. So you're headed to a dealership. Why the dealership? Potentially. Is this a new car purchase? A used car purchase?
Don (03:43)
potentially. ⁓
I'm trying
to get a I'm trying to get another used car for the family. I've got a teenage driver coming up and it is time to get her a car and to get her practicing on the car that she's probably going to take the test in right versus one of our versus one of our cars right and so you know we all know this I'm not breaking any new ground here I mean gone are the days of the $1,500 beater
that teenagers drive or that we drove, right? Like cheap, cheap, know, like cars that broke down all the time and teenagers learning how to fix their own cars, right? Used cars are unbelievably expensive, right? ⁓ So I think I'm not a fan of the dealership. I know that you do not love dealerships. You're a Carvana fan. I've got many friends that are CarMax fans, right? I think here's what's happened. ⁓ we have set alerts in for Carvana. We've set alerts in for CarMax, right? We're getting emails. Things are happening, right?
Rob (04:14)
Yeah.
Right.
Yeah.
Don (04:42)
Funny thing happened along the way of that journey is taking a look at the Carfax reports. Okay, Carfax does the same thing, right? Where you can sign up for whatever, but that's just pulling an aggregate of local of what's for you, right? So Carvana and CarMax are giving you the national price of a three-year-old, you know, Jeep or whatever, whatever it is, right? But actually going through Carfax, this is kind of a shout out for Carfax. ⁓ There are better deals.
Rob (04:52)
Yeah.
Right.
Don (05:11)
absolutely through dealerships, meaning like, and here's what I mean by better deal, meaning a newer vehicle with less mileage for a few thousand dollars less than what you're going to get on CarMax or Carvana, that type of thing, right? So I was all set for, let's do it through Carvana, call it, call I've done that before, right? Just call it a day, we're done here, moving on. But I was like, well, hold on a second here.
Rob (05:18)
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah.
Don (05:34)
if there's something that's within striking distance where I could go drive, you know what mean? And just double check it, right? Old school, you know, put eyes on it, actually touch it, right? And then hey, maybe the little bit of a wheel in a deal, you know, like, hey, can we take a little bit of this off for that? You know, that type of thing? Maybe it's worth it. So do I want to do this? Absolutely not. You know, ⁓ every time you go to a dealership to buy a car, you are there for no less than four hours. I mean, it's unbelievable.
Rob (05:59)
⁓ is. It's nothing.
Some things never change. Like just some things never change. So now, OK, now qualification for Carvana and Carmac. Well, I know for Carvana you do get a week to drive the car and you can have it independently inspected and turn it back in and go, I don't like the way it smells and no harm, no foul. And funny enough, we have a car on order at Carmacs right now because I too, I too.
Don (06:10)
Yeah. Yeah. Seven days. Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly.
What?
You have the teenage driver coming up.
Rob (06:30)
a
soon to be teenage driver, June 15th. ⁓ So we are in the same boat, meaning we want to get the car so she can drive, you know.
Don (06:33)
Okay, wow. All right.
I'm starting to not necessarily get sticker shock about used cars. mean, used cars are expensive. I'm starting to get the significant sticker shock about teenage insurance. I mean, it's more like the car is the car, but my Lord. Dude. ⁓
Rob (06:49)
Yeah.
Well, let me tell you what, my friend, this Brady
Brunch family that I have, ⁓ this will be our...
Don (07:02)
Yeah.
Rob (07:09)
fifth car.
Don (07:10)
⁓
Rob (07:12)
our fifth car. So I was telling somebody that now let me I should qualify that my wife's car is a company car. So that's you know, so but there but there are four that we've had to buy and actively maintain and insure and all of the things. And I was telling somebody about this not long ago and they're like, well, hey, have you looked at fleet insurance? And I was like, well, that was my first one. I was like, huh? I was like, you know, I've never even
Don (07:14)
my god, dude.
It doesn't count. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
How many cars do you need for a fleet? Yeah.
That's interesting. OK.
Rob (07:40)
never really thought about that. And I'll be
honest, I haven't looked up what qualifies as a fleet, but I thought that was a really interesting idea, potentially.
Don (07:45)
Okay.
I mean, that's actually
not a bad idea. I guess it has to be commercial. It's kind of like they're like the Mercedes Benz G Wagon is that weird car as well. And here's what I mean by that. Like it like why are there so many G wagons out and about? And why do people drive them? And why are they so ridiculous when they're just totally expensive and don't get good gas mileage and all the good things? It is like the heaviest vehicle. So it counts. It's over 8000 pounds. So it counts. It counts as a commercial vehicle.
So if you own your own business or you have a commercial, whatever, then it's totally, it's not under your residential stuff. You can stick it under your business and then you can depreciate it like a business asset and that whole thing. That's a tax write off, right? ⁓ I always found that, cause I'm like, why are there so many of these things out there? And it was like, dude, it's the commercial side. Yeah, so free insurance.
Rob (08:24)
is disaster.
Yeah.
I didn't, I did not know that. And I'm sure there's, I'm sure there's
20 reasons why I can't ensure my fleet as a fleet. ⁓ But it was more funny than anything else. was like, my gosh, I've got to deal with four cards.
Don (08:44)
Yeah. Yeah. I mean.
Yeah, alright, well you've got
a car on reserve and it's coming. It's on its way. This is what's happening. OK, that's exciting.
Rob (08:53)
It's on its way. It's on its way
down from, I think, Virginia. Because same thing, we did put the alerts out and this one came in and...
Don (08:57)
Okay.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, gone or...
Rob (09:06)
And they only charge you
now, or at least for this one, was only $99 to transfer it down here. No.
Don (09:10)
Okay, well that's not bad. Sometimes those things are expensive.
They're like 1500 bucks for transfer fees or whatever, you know,
Rob (09:15)
Sometimes
I feel like with with Carvana before I've paid maybe 200 or something like that. But anyway, 99 bucks to get it down and I have I have told my wife she's like I want to go out and do this with with Tessa and go do the I'm going do all this and which means there's a thousand percent chance that we are purchasing this car. Yeah, yeah, that's right. That's right. Well.
Don (09:20)
Okay. That's not bad. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, that's that there's no like, let's send it back. No, I mean, that car will be in the driveway is what's about to happen. anyway, so yeah,
so Memorial Day. I mean, what other type of Memorial Day advertising aspects? mean, we've got multiple brands, obviously, that have done the ⁓ official sponsor of summer, you know, I've always loved things like that, right, where you pick a behavior or an attitude or a time period, and you don't have any fees with that you just align your brand with
Rob (09:55)
Sure.
Don (10:04)
certain things, you know what mean? Like, ⁓ like a summer shandy beer, right? You know what I mean? It's like, that's the official sponsor. The summer starts when you're drinking shandies, you know, type of thing, right? For those that don't know, it's obviously beer mixed with lemonade. ⁓ But you know, which wouldn't naturally align itself with winter, for example. So it's summer thing, right? So
Rob (10:13)
Yeah.
That's
kind of akin to the voted world's best hamburger. There's no voting. No one's voting. Anyone voting?
Don (10:28)
Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Now, now, now,
no, no, no, well, it reminds me of, you know, the elf, right? The world's best cup of coffee, right? That whole scene, you know what I mean? Like, you've done it, you made the world's best cup of coffee. So yeah, I mean, I think, you know, obviously, there's a tremendous amount of ⁓ goodwill for vets, everybody gets, you know, percentages off of meals, and things like all that type of stuff, right? I mean, that's kind of an annual sort of thing, right? But ⁓
Rob (10:38)
Right. That's
Yeah.
Don (10:56)
Yeah, any other aspects of Memorial Day you can sort of tie in with advertising, guess, or?
Rob (11:02)
No, I think it's in a broader sense, like Memorial Day, Labor Day, a lot of these holidays, ⁓ not Memorial Day because that is, ⁓ it's an important holiday, the reason behind it, but it does feel like a lot of these holidays, some of them anyway, just kind of stick around for advertising sake, right? Yeah. Flag Day. mean, I mean, Labor Day. like, is that really, really, really, ⁓
Don (11:21)
Yeah, Flag Day. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
Rob (11:29)
just so that people can push products in a way. ⁓
Don (11:33)
Yeah. Amen.
We got to send out our eblasts. We got to be you know, we got to have a reason to beat our chest once a month and send something out. Yeah, exactly. 20 % off, you know. Yeah, I'm sure that there are furniture emails are going out. What's today? Wednesday? There are furniture emails going out tomorrow from Roos to go about Memorial Day, Memorial Day blast, know, so
Rob (11:39)
Yeah, code Memorial Day 26. Yeah. Promo codes abound.
yeah. yeah.
Don (11:59)
Yeah, I mean, I think it's a great day to do yard work. I'll be doing some yard work, feel like, and then maybe do some barbecuing. I mean, it is a classic barbecue day, you know? Break the grill out. You still smoking using Traeger and all the different things? You gotta break that baby out.
Rob (12:03)
Yeah.
I
do, I use both. I'm that sucker who bought the Blackstone, I bought the Traeger, all these things that are in vogue right now. And I do, I use them all the time, I love them. I love them. I've only done, on the Traeger, I've only done a brisket once.
Don (12:22)
Yeah, good luck. Yeah.
Yeah, it's awesome.
Dude, I feel like it's calling your name for this weekend then.
Rob (12:39)
I remember and I probably told this story before I remember I was like finally I was like okay I mean you obviously start with ribs and you start with pork butt you start with you know some of those things and I finally was like all right I'm gonna I'm gonna do it like I'm gonna try it with brisket. I remember going to my local butcher and I got the thing I mean it was huge it was a giant one I don't remember how much it weighed but it was massive and I just remember I'm just standing there at the checkout line the guy next to me just looks at me he just goes good luck you know
Don (13:05)
Yeah. Yeah.
Rob (13:07)
It turned out great, actually turned out great. ⁓
Don (13:09)
How long did
it, that thing cooked for over 24 hours, right? No, not that long.
Rob (13:12)
I, no, I think
I ended up cooking it for like 12 or 13 hours, something like that. And it was great, it was super fun. But I prefer like to do a pork butt or wings. Wings on the trigger, smoked wings are really good.
Don (13:16)
Okay, okay. All right. I'm mistaken.
smoked wings are the best. I don't know why that's not more of a thing. Smoked wings are incredible. yeah, well now that now the thing is, my wife just told me that ⁓ they've got it's the triple threat. So instead of like, you used to have like, hey, here's your propane, you know, gas powered grill, or here's your charcoal grill, right? And then they smushed them both together. I don't know if you've seen that where it's like half on one half, you know, well, now it's the three, it's the triple threat, it is one part propane, one part charcoal.
Rob (13:29)
Smoke wings are great. I use the black stone.
Yeah, sure.
Don (13:54)
and then now they have a smoker box on the end. You know what I mean? So I'm like, I don't know, might have to try one of those. So who knows.
Rob (13:56)
Yeah.
Yeah,
I use them. mean, and again, I'm embarrassed to say I do. have all three. I have the propane, have the flat top, and then I have the smoker.
Don (14:09)
It's alright.
Yeah, the flat
top is one thing we haven't cracked on yet, but it looks amazing and everybody loves them.
Rob (14:17)
The flat
top is great. It's great for making my kids love, as everybody does, the smash burgers. And so it's really good. It's really good for that. Honestly, outside of that, don't, I mean, I've done hash browns and I've done, yeah, I mean, I can cook bacon on it, but I was going to say it's a very breakfast leaning, you know, I mean, eggs and hash browns and bacon and sausage and stuff like that. Very good for that. But I don't make like, I mean, no one's cooking a steak on the thing.
Don (14:23)
Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Cook bacon. Aren't you supposed to bacon on those things? Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah.
Sure, Pancakes. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, no, no. All right, well, I got cars, you know, I got cars and yard work, I think in my future from Memorial Day, you know. What's that? Hot dogs, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Rob (14:47)
This is not happening.
Yeah, I got hot dogs. I got hot dogs. Rilling out.
Mr. C was saying, here's how he cooks hot dogs. This is a random anecdote. He now takes them and cooks them in a, a little bit of water in a sauce pan on the stove top and basically steams them. I've never done that before.
Don (15:07)
All right, let's let's hear it.
Okay. Yeah.
Yeah, I've done that before.
What? How do you cook hot dogs?
Rob (15:23)
And then pours the water
out and then puts it back in to crisp the outside of it.
Don (15:27)
Oh, he pours the water out. Okay. It's like I've used to cook them where they're half submerged in water. So you get the water like, like a rolling boil, but they're kind of still in there, right to soften them up or whatever. But he dumps the water out and leaves them in there and lets them crisp up. Okay. That's not a bad methodology of doing that. Yeah. How have you traditionally done it? You know, don't tell me 30 seconds in the microwave. Throw them on the grill. Yeah, I mean, well, I mean, if you're not gonna fire up the grill, if you're just gonna, you know, so
Rob (15:35)
Yeah.
to get that good crust on the outside. Seems like a pretty good technique.
Now I throw a drill.
Yeah. I mean,
I remember growing up, my mom just used to boil them.
Don (16:02)
Yeah. Fully submerged. Yeah, like a full spaghetti pot full of water. We're boiling hot dogs. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think that works. But you know, that's not we have we have elevated past that in our hot dog game, you know. So ⁓ All right.
Rob (16:02)
Like fully submerged, like full boil. Like here it is. Yeah. From boil to bun. I'm like, I'm not, that's not, doesn't work.
It's not good.
I think so. I feel like we have.
Where do we go from here?
Don (16:22)
I think we sold your fourth to Memorial Day is what I think we do. Yeah.
Rob (16:26)
I that's it. I think that's it. Well, I hope everybody
has a safe and enjoyable one out there. Enjoy the time and the warm weather. And we will see you back here for the next episode. But Don, before we go, tell us where the people can find us.
